This is a picture of color. It felt a little bit like coming home to help the ArtLords paint a mural at the Afghanistan Embassy in Washington, DC yesterday, although it made me homesick for Kabul to hear Dari, rabab music, and conversations of people who deeply love and will never give up on Afghanistan. Omaid Sharifi literally lights up the spaces he occupies with his art—ArtLords makes canvases of Kabul’s endless concrete blast walls, painting messages of hope, peace, anti-corruption, tolerance, nonviolent masculinity, government accountability.
Some Afghans are such strong, good humans that I just feel confused. How? Omaid cultivates hope for a living, can you imagine? America was so lucky to have him for a brief visit before he headed back home to Kabul, just in time for the Eid holidays. The last time I helped paint an ArtLords mural was near the American Embassy in Kabul. Both times, I felt so lucky to have spent time with some of the world’s best people. Both times, there’s nowhere I would rather have been.
